I loved this book it’s a beautiful, thought-provoking story that I struggled to put down. The Midnight Library is a fantasy that touches on a subject I bet everyone thinks about at some stage in life ‘What could I have done differently.’
The story follows Nora Seed, a thirty-something struggling with depression and finds herself at rock bottom.
Her cats died, and she lost her job. Feeling hopeless and lost late one evening, she tries to take her life. But, rather than death, Nora finds herself in the Midnight library.
The Midnight Library is a realm between life and death.
Within the Midnight Library, shelves are filled with neverending book volumes. Each of these books represents a different version of Nora’s life; her possibilities are vast and endless. In some versions, she’s a mother, a wife, famous, influential or something close to her original self. She has many jobs, from rock star to Olympic swimmer, Arctic researcher to dog shelter assistant. All she has to do is pick a volume and open the book to try out these lives. Easy right? Maybe not.

I feel there is a little bit of Nora in all of us.
We are all trying to muddle our way through life, wondering if there is something more.
Matt Haig has done an excellent job of confronting depression and anxiety in a light-hearted way while adding in a little dark humour.
The story really spoke to me. I could see a little of myself in Nore and it put things into perspective for me, my wants, needs, desires and regrets. The need for something more makes you think more about what you do have. Whether or not the grass is greener on the other side or, in fact, in another life.
